Ruta Tres
Itinerary
Comodoro
Rivadavia
Day 1:
Pick up from airport and transfer
to your hotel. Depending on time of arrival,
you can take a walk around this busy 150,000-people
town, the largest of all southern Patagonia.
Comodoro hotel. Welcome dinner.
Puerto
Deseado
Day 2:
Breakfast. Depart for Caleta Olivia along
a winding highway which seems to keep
company to the sunny wide sandy beaches.
Now and then, with the background of towering
hills, a herd of unconcerned guanacos
watch humans pass by. Midday will surely
find you enjoying the breeze of the South
Atlantic from your very window. That is
Port Desire, a most significant spot for
its historical and natural heritage. Hotel
Los Acantilados
Day 3:
Breakfast. Full day sail along the estuary,
into the canyon carved by water into the
massive porphyry for a spectacular view
of a unique diversity of wildlife: sea-lions,
dolphins and the colorful grey cormorant.
Land on Bird Island for that exceptional
picture of penguins, ducks, gulls and
so many other species of birds that make
an endless list. What about lunch at open
air? As the sun sets, return to your hotel.
Hotel Los Acantilados
Puerto
San Julian
Day 4:
Breakfast. Early morning departure for
yet another quest. This time we explore
the origins of Patagonia at the Jaramillo
Petrified Forest, where gigantic petrified
trees dating from the Mesozoic era, await
us. Trunks measuring up to 35 metres in
length lie in the midst of a myriad of
colorful layers of clay. Drive on south,
towards San Julian, one more town full
of mysteries of past centuries. Box lunch
included. Accommodation. Hotel Bahia
Day 5:
Breakfast. Although by now we have already
taken numbers of pictures of the endless
numbers of animals and things we have
found along the way, this is a really
special day. Very early in the morning
we hop on our vehicle and head for “La
María”, a ranch where the
early Patagonian inhabitants left their
message for the forthcoming generations
in the shape of painted hands. Over eighty
caverns await us to come and explore them.
What about a barbecue for lunch? At the
end of this exceptional day we drive back
to our accommodation. Estancia La Maria.
Day 6:
Breakfast. A second try at our quest to
La María’s caverns.
Accommodation
at Estancia La Maria.
Río
Gallegos
Day 7:
This late morning we head south,
in search of yet another “pearl”
of the vast Patagonian natural treasure:
the confluence of rivers Chico and Santa
Cruz, cutting their way into the South
Atlantic amid huge masses of porphyry.
This is where we stop for lunch and a
short visit to the local museum. On to
Rio Gallegos.
Accommodation.
Hotel Santa Cruz.
Day 8:
Breakfast. We are nearing the end of our
tour, but also getting close to the end
of America. Yes, today we take a trip
to the very tip of the Americas: Cape
Virgins, at the mouth of the legendary
Straits of Magellan. Visit the southernmost
light- house in the continent and take
“that” picture of the tip
of America, and then go for the penguin
rookery. Have lunch at a cute little restaurant
…right there! Return to your hotel
in Río Gallegos. Hotel Santa Cruz.
Day 9:
Breakfast. All good things finally come
to an end. So we see you off at the airport.
See you soon?
